Getting there
There is now a direct charter flight from Manchester and London to Salvador. Two companies are currently running flights: Airtours and First Choice.
Airtours flies from Manchester and London Gatwick on Fridays all year round: phone 0870 241 2567 [www.airtours.com] (click on flights).
First Choice flies to Salvador May to October only. It’s not possible to book this flight on the web as I write (November) so you would have to phone 0870 850 3999 for information – there is a £15 fee for booking over the phone. Flights are bookable for a stay of two weeks only [www.firstchoice.co.uk].
Scheduled flights are available on TAP (Air Portugal). These flights book up very quickly and are usually more expensive than the charter flights [www.flytap.com].
American guests are advised to contact their travel advisor for details on flights or visit Varig’s website [www.varig.com].
Currency and inoculations
The currency in Brazil is the Real.
When you book I will advise you about
the best thing to do regarding taking
money and cards etc.
You will need to check your vaccination
status: in the UK you are advised to have
typhoid, Hepatitis A, Polio and Diptheria/Tetanus.
You do not need a visa to travel to Brazil
from the UK but you do from the US. For
other countries please check the Brazilian
Embassy in your country.

Visit the villa via Google earth. We can send you a placemark so you can ‘fly’ to the villa using Google’s satellite images. You will need to download the Google Earth software first – go to [www.Earth.google.com] then, [email me] for the link – you will then be taken to a satellite picture of the villa – it’s fun.
This is the local website for Praia do Flamengo and the surrounding area. There are some good aerial photographs of the area although the still photographs of Praia do Flamengo are poor. There’s lots of information on the web site but only in Portuguese. Have a look at the moving aerial shots though.
This is the official Salvador Carnival site – there is an English option. The Salvador Carnival in February each year is the biggest street party in the world and bigger than the carnival in Rio.
